As I was exploring the Railyard District in Santa Fe last week, I happened upon this mural on the corner of Paseo de Peralta and Guadalupe Street … the snake and some sort of cat appear ready to engage in mortal combat. But it’s the presence of the yin yang symbol in the middle that changes the tone of this battle scene – because in Chinese philosophy, the yin yang symbol is meant to express the concept that apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary and interconnected in the natural world. Maybe the mural artist is suggesting we put aside our differences and get along?
